Artist: Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1824-1881). "H.L. Rolfe's Study of Fresh-Water Fish No. 3, Salmon, and Trout. From the River Wye." 1856. An original hand-colored lithograph by M & N Hanhart. London, Published 1st November 1856, by Messrs. William Tegg & Co. 28 Queen Street, Cheapside. This gorgeous work by Henry Leonidas Rolfe is from a series of six oval hand-colored lithographs that depict the freshwater fish of England's rivers. Rolfe devoted himself to rendering angling themes and was also - not surprisingly - a skilled fisherman. One can see a portrait of Rolfe with his catch on a river bank in the Government Art Collection (England). A stunning composition of four fish, including salmon and trout, set in a natural environment, with native leafy plants gracing the sandy shore and hillsides or mountains beyond the river, set in a masterfully created, museum-quality frame. Size of sight view: 20.125" L x 23" W (51.1 cm x 58.4 cm) Size of frame: 31.875" L x 34.75" W (81 cm x 88.3 cm)

Condition
This original, hand-colored lithograph has not been examined outside the frame, but appears to be in superb condition save slight toning and minor age wear. This print was issued as one of a portfolio of six (independently rather than for a book). Given the size of the matte window, we believe it was not trimmed prior to framing. Hand coloring is vivid, as is the imagery. Text above and below are vivid as well. The framing is just as magnificent - truly of museum quality.
