Europe, Germany, ca. 1600. A beautiful woodblock from a German Renaissance manuscript with a wonderful image of armed soldiers gathering around their leaders, each soldier holding his sword upright out of respect and allegiance. Note that the leaders don fancy uniforms with grand hats and their horses assume dynamic poses. Above the leaders and their entourage is a landscape scene featuring a church and a castle amidst rolling hills with mountains in the distance that stretches across the figural composition below. Elegant Gothic script graces both sides of the manuscript page. A wonderful woodcut that offers a glimpse into the art of printmaking in the Northern Renaissance. Size of manuscript page: 12.125" L x 8.25" W (30.8 cm x 21 cm) Size of frame: 17.375" L x 14.375" W (44.1 cm x 36.5 cm)
