British, "Jackey The Canadian" oil on board, 1894. Signed "W.J." with "9" and "4" flanking the superimposed initials of the artist to indicate the date of the painting. A charming folk art painting of a grey draft horse with a black mane, tail, and fittings standing in a stable, getting ready to pull a carriage. The horse is named "Jackey The Canadian" (painted in white on the lower left) and was likely brought over to England from Canada. As the informative label on the verso indicates, this painting was probably commissioned by the horse's owner. A wonderful painting of "Jackey The Canadian" delineated in a charming folk art style and set in an attractive period frame.
