Karl Martin Schade (Austrian, 1862-1954). Oil on canvas board. ca. 1920s to 1940s. Signed at the lower right. A stunning landscape painting by Karl Martin Schade, this composition presents a serene expanse of desert populated only by the occasional cactus and other desert plants, blue mountains beyond, and the wide open Western sky dotted by a few clouds. Beginning in the early 20th century, the stark lands and crystal clear skies of the American West lured both American and European artists, as the dramatic colors, minimalist shapes, and flat picture planes resonated with early Modernist sensibilities of the early 20th century. Size: 23.375" W x 17.375" H (59.4 cm x 44.1 cm); (frame): 29.25" W x 23.3" H (74.3 cm x 59.2 cm)
Karl Martin Schade was an accomplished Austrian landscape painter. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (later known as the University of Applied Arts Vienna) from 1881 and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna between 1882 and 1885. Schade studied with Ludwig Minnerode from 1889 to 1890. He participated in art exhibitions in Vienna, Munich, Brno, and Prague, and also received the Gold Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria in 1932. In 1935, his paintings were exhibited at a collective exhibition at the Palmenhaus by the Burggarten in Vienna.
