A large-format charcoal and pencil drawing on paper entitled "The Squaw Man", signed at the lower left "Lavallie-05", and set in a magnificent frame of the period with forged iron link decorations. The title "The Squaw Man" is engraved on a fixed brass plaque of same era is affixed to the lower section of the frame. The rifleman depicted is the protagonist James Wynnegate from a Broadway stage play (1905) written by Beulah Marie Dix which was adapted into a Western silent film (1914) directed by Cecil B. DeMille (DeMille's directorial debut) and Oscar Apfel. The frontiersman is depicted full-length and posed upon bent knee, dressed in western garb including a cowboy hat, neckerchief, fringed buckskins, cartridge belt, and spurs - peering into the distance. The drawing is signed and dated at the lower left and set in a unique frame - hewn from flat wooden planks that are painted black and adorned by metal chain links swagged between metal rings placed at each corner. Given that the drawing is dated to 1905, it probably was created for promotional materials for the Broadway play. Size: 24.5" L x 19" W (62.2 cm x 48.3 cm); 30.75" L x 25.375" W (78.1 cm x 64.5 cm) framed
Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Norm Fladerman, 1970's
