"American Choice Fruits." New York: Currier & Ives, 1869. Large folio. 16 7/8 x 23 3/4. Lithograph with original hand color. C:111. A beautiful still life presenting a large platter of fruit overflowing with grapes, peaches, apples, and a tempting melon wedge, with a charming bird's nest housing three eggs in the foreground, a glass pitcher and goblet to the right, and leaves cascading over the table's edge serving as a quintessential trompe l'oeil effect to trick the viewer's eye. Currier & Ives initially printed the lithograph in black and white. Following this, they had the finest colors, imported from Austria, applied by hand. A wonderful example set in a period frame. Size of image: 16.625" L x 23.875" W (42.2 cm x 60.6 cm) Size of frame: 23.375" L x 29.4" W (59.4 cm x 74.7 cm)
The artists employed by Currier & Ives - including Lois Maurer, Thomas Worth, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, Frances Flora Bond Palmer, George H. Durrie, Napoleon Sarony, Charles Parsons, and J.E. Butterworth - were among the finest of their time. According to the Philadelphia Print Shop West label on the verso, "From 1834 to 1907 the firm of Currier & Ives provided for the American people a pictorial history of their country's growth from an agricultural society to an industrialized one. For nearly three quarters of a century the firm provided "Colored Engravings for the People" and in the process, because of the Democratic philosophy of business, became the visual raconteurs of nineteenth century America."
An unframed version of this print is currently listed by The Old Print Shop for $2750.

Lithograph has not been examined outside the frame. Imagery is vivid with original hand color, albeit with some fading. Appears to have a few crease marks/possible tears in the margins and a few areas of the printed image. Light stains, mostly visible in margins. Otherwise appears in good condition with margins. Period frame has a few chips and stains to the finish as shown. On the gallery paper on the verso is a Philadelphia Print Shop West label.
