A pair of large-scale, historical pendant portraits of Colonel Richard Lee, who came to Virginia from England and settled in Gloucestor County in 1642, and his wife Anne Lee. Both were ancestors of General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), and both were painted by Louise Schaefer Cone, a portraitist of prominent figures of the American South. The portrait of Richard Lee was inspired by a painting entitled "The Emigrant" - attributed to Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) - which dates to ca. 1640 and was featured in the catalogue for "Stratford The Lees of Virginia". According to the catalogue entry, "Richard Lee, progenitor of the Lees of Virginia, arrived in Virginia about 1641, and became prominently identified with the Colony. He patented large estates in Gloucestor, Northumberland, and Westmoreland Counties. These estates included Paradise on the York River, Cobbs Hall and Ditchley on Dividing Creek, Lee Hall and Mount Pleasant in Westmoreland County. He held important offices at Jamestown, capital of the colony of Virginia. He was appointed a Member of His Majesty's Council and was elected Member of the House of Burgesses, Secretary of State, and Attorney General. He married Anne (family name unknown), and their children were John, Richard, Francis, William, Hancock, Betsey, Anne, and Charles. He died at his home, Cobbs Hall, Virginia, 1664."
Paired with the portrait of Colonel Richard Lee is a large-scale portrait of his wife, Anne Lee by Louise Schaefer Cone. Both Richard and Anne Lee were ancestors of General Robert E. Lee. Cone painted a half-length portrait of Anne wearing a beautiful emerald green gown with with lace over the bust. She looks beyond the picture plane with elegance and grace, captivating us with her big blue eyes, pink lips, rosy cheeks, and curled blonde coiffure. This portrait and that of her husband were modeled on portraits by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) featured in the exhibition "Stratford: The Lees of Virginia and Their Contemporaries". Louise Schaefer Cone was born and spent most of her life in Birmingham, Alabama. She studied with Edna Smith, George Elmer Browne, and Roderick MacKenzie. In addition, she studied in New York with Wayman Adams, Frank Vincent Dumond, and George Bridgman. Ms. Cone was a member of the New York Art League, the Southern States Art League, as well as the Birmingham Art Club. Although proficient in portraiture, still lifes, and landscapes, she is best known for her portraits of prominent figures of the American South, many of which hang in museums and government buildings. During her lifetime, she received several awards for her oils and pastel compositions.
These paintings are accompanied by a statement written by Inza Lee Fort who is a living descendant of Robert E. Lee. Ms. Fort and her siblings are the great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren of Richard and Anna Lee. In her statement, Inza Lee Fort describes the family's relationship to the artist Louise Schaefer Cone and states that the subjects of these paintings are Colonel Richard Lee and his wife Anna who were the first of the Lee family line in America who came to America in the 1640s and settled in York County, Virginia. Robert E. Lee was a great, great, great grandson of Richard and Anna Lee. Robert E. Lee is also an uncle to Inza Lee Fort's branch of the family tree.
Inza Lee Fort's description of the family's relationship to the artist Louise Schafer Cone is as follows, "My aunt, Louise Short Lee, was a friend and sometimes model for some of Louise Cone's paintings. After marrying into the Lee family, Aunt Louise asked Louise Cone to paint several of the Lee family members. Portraits that my aunt and uncle had were passed to my mother after they died. These portraits were then passed to me and my sister after my mother died."
