Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A tender rendition of N.S. Refugio de Pecadores - Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners - painted in vibrant hues on heavy gauge tin adhered to a thick wooden board and set in a lovely frame. In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. The painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child whose body is covered by a relatively diaphanous robe. The Virgin dons a scarf that is drawn across her right shoulder, and her dark blue cape is initialed with her ciphers. The Christ Child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand. It is a touching scene, and this rendition clearly follows Rosa's tenets. Size of retablo: 10" L x 7" W (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm) Size of frame: 11.125" L x 8.2" W (28.3 cm x 20.8 cm)

Condition
Retablo presents with expected age wear - scuffs, abrasions, and minor losses to peripheries commensurate with age. Two perforations at top and bottom center presumably from earlier display. Frame dates much later than retablo and just shows a few minor scuffs and remains of label on one side. Wired for suspension.
