Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Southern Sumatra, Lampung region, Tampan, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A very large Tampan textile, comprised of four long panels mounted together against museum-grade linen in a custom gold tone frame. Each panel was finely woven with red yarns (cotton and/or silk) to create intricate designs that present an overall symmetrical geometric composition, although close inspection reveals wonderful confronting avian motifs as well - perhaps peacocks or roosters given their crests. Tampan textiles woven in red are regarded as sacred, and those with motifs inspired by nature and geometry were created in the inland mountains. A fabulous example created by women of the Lampung region of southern Sumatra in an area that, being an important trade route ever since antiquity, has reflected a rich blend of cultural and artistic expressions. Size: 44" W x 31.75" H (111.8 cm x 80.6 cm) Size: 44" W x 31.75" H (111.8 cm x 80.6 cm); 48.5" W x 36.375" H (123.2 cm x 92.4 cm) framed
According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art curatorial team, "Tampan were owned and used by virtually every Lampung family to consecrate ritual occasions and to assist each individual as he or she progressed through the diverse ceremonies that marked the various stages of life. Tampan were displayed or exchanged at both birth and death, at marriages, circumcisions, and ceremonies marking changes in social rank. They served as the focal point for ceremonial meals, as the seat for the elders who oversaw traditional law, and were tied to the ridge poles of newly built houses. They were a sacred force that bound society together.
Tampan occur in two regional styles and in two primary colors. Those woven in blue depict the secular realm, those in red the sacred. Examples from the inland mountains show stylized natural or domestic subjects and geometric designs, while those from the coast (tampan pasisir) display richly detailed scenes of ships and other motifs."

Condition
Minute losses/areas of loose weaving in a few places, most at the peripheries of top two panels. Third panel from the top is stitched from two pieces with some loss to motifs at the seam. Small purple stain on second from uppermost panel. Normal areas of fading and slight discoloration commensurate with age. Some tearing to gallery paper on verso that does not impact the textile. A few scuffs to the frame, but otherwise framing is excellent. Wired for suspension and ready to hang.
