Europe, Victorian after David Teniers the Younger (also David Teniers II, Flemish, 1610-1690), ca. 1850 to 1880 CE. Oil painting on heavy gauge tin. A quaint genre painting of a group of peasants gathered around a table in a charming outdoor setting, about to partake in a feast. From left to right the group includes: a gentleman standing in profile, smoking a pipe and holding a tankard, dressed in work clothes and a feathered brimmed hat; another man holding a pan with a nice piece of meat or fish in it in one hand and a knife to slice it in the other; and finally a woman at the head of the table conversing with a young couple, the man with his arm around the lady. This lively gathering takes place in a charming setting of vernacular houses and mature trees. Size: 6.5" L x 8" W (16.5 cm x 20.3 cm); 11.25" L x 12.375" W (28.6 cm x 31.4 cm) including frame

The curatorial essay begins, "David Teniers the Younger was not only one of the most prolific Flemish artists but also one of the most versatile. Although best known for his representations of peasant life, he painted subjects that range from alchemists and witches to allegorical and biblical themes. Moreover, Teniers painted views of collectors' cabinets, many of which include portraits, and also made small-scale copies of Italian paintings."

Condition
Some scratches here and there as is commensurate with age, but the imagery is still quite strong. Age wear evident on the verso. Frame has tiny loss to mitered edge of upper right corner and some expected wear, but is otherwise in very good condition with a beautiful age patina.
