Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A tender rendition of N.S. Refugio de Pecadores - Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners - painted on heavy gauge tin in vibrant hues and set in a tin nicho with glass-fronted foil painting insets. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child whose nude body is covered by a transparent robe. She dons a scarf that is drawn across her right shoulder, and her dark blue cape is initialed with her ciphers. The Christ child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand. Adding to the beauty of this piece is the meticulously worked tin nicho presenting square panels featuring rosettes in repousse at each corner, a cut tin garland crowning the upper section with elaborate scrolled openwork resolving in festoons of leaves at each side, as well as hand-painted golden foil under glass panels depicting leafy festoons of blossoming red, blue, and white flowers. Size: 14.25" L x 10" W (36.2 cm x 25.4 cm); 21.375" L x 16.25" W (54.3 cm x 41.3 cm) framed
In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. The painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting. It is a touching scene, and this rendition clearly follows Rosa's tenets.

Condition
Although the retablo has not been examined outside the frame, it appears to be in very good condition with a few scuffs and normal surface wear commensurate with age. Most of the pigmentation remains and the imagery is strong. The tin nicho shows normal age patina and some indentations/bending (on the verso for the most part). There is a small area of loss to the glass at the lower end of the left proper panel, a crack at the right of the upper panel of glass, and minor weathering to the peripheries of the foil panels under glass.
