Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A lovely retablo finely painted on heavy gauge tin - a tender rendition of N.S. Refugio de Pecadores - Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners - set in an attractive frame with a carved berried vine motif and traces of gilding. The Virgin wears a golden crown and supports a crowned Christ Child whose nude body is covered by a transparent robe decorated with white stars that also adorn the border of the Virgin's halo . She dons a blue and white scarf that is drawn across her right shoulder, and her dark blue cape is initialed with her ciphers. The Christ Child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her right thumb with his left hand. Surrounding the Virgin and Child is a beautiful floral wreath. A touching scene that demonstrates the artist's fondness for intricate detail and composition. Size of frame: 18.5" L x 14.95" W (47 cm x 38 cm)
The composition of this retablo has an interesting history. In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. That painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting.

Condition
Retablo has not been examined or measured outside of frame. Frame has some small cracks on surface and appears to have been repaired/repainted along the cracked edges and lower side. The retablo has some minute scratches and bends, but is largely in nice condition with vivid imagery.
