Artist AF Tait (Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (British-American, 1819-1905) & Engraver George Blott. Piper-Heidsieck Champagne and Puppies engraving on canvas. Ca. 1877. "Draeger Imp. Printed in France" on the lower left. "D-Apres A. J. Tait NY USA 1877 Geo. Blot. T-06" on lower right. An advertisement for Piper-Heidsieck champagne that presents a lively scene featuring a dog - perhaps a miniature pincher - pursuing a rat from a packing case while another dog - a fluffy terrier mix - observes the chase. Notice that the case has broken open and in wonderful trompe l'oeil fashion, bottles of champagne are spilling from it, and a bottle in the foreground is broken. Sweetly sitting atop the uppermost case is a bottle with two champagne glasses. To the upper left is a rendering of a piper with the name of the company written above and 1785 (the year when Piper-Heidsieck was founded) to the right. Printed on canvas with custom mats surfaced in a suede finish, gilded filets, and a mottled finished frame reminiscent of leather. Size: 42.125" W x 35.625" H (107 cm x 90.5 cm) framed
Piper-Heidsieck is one of the oldest Champagne houses, founded by Florens-Louis Heidsieck in 1785 in Reims, France. Heidsieck joined with Piper in 1839.
