Spanish Colonial, Peru, ca. 18th to 19th century CE A fine antique Peruvian oil on canvas painting depicting St. Anthony of Padua holding the baby Jesus. The origin of this image stems from the story of Count Tiso of Padua, who witnessed St. Anthony communing with Jesus in child form while praying in his home. Here St. Anthony is shown wearing a friar robe, embracing the Christ Child who is dressed in red vestments and sits upon a table covered in a blue textile with a holy book and white lilies often associated with St. Anthony of Padua behind Him. Both figures’ visages have holy light emanating from their heads; St Anthony has a distinct halo, and the baby Jesus has rays of light radiating from his golden curls. "NA S. ANTONO DE PADUA" is painted in white at the lower right, and the composition is set in a gorgeous custom frame that is intricately carved and painted in a glimmering shade of gold. Size of canvas: 15.75" W x 23.625" H (40 cm x 60 cm) Size of frame: 18.5" W x 28.5" H (47 cm x 72.4 cm)
This is a particularly poignant composition; the expressions on the faces of the subjects are endearing; the palette is brilliant; and the tonal contrasts conjure palpable light and shadow. The Child reaches up to hold the friar; in return, St. Anthony of Padua supports Jesus with both hands wrapped around His back; and both smile gently.

Repair to canvas just to the right of St. Anthony of Padua, small scuff in his robe and on table front, else quite excellent.
