Louis Simon Lempereur (French, 1728-1807). "Delices des Flamans" engraving after painting by David Teniers the Younger (Flemish, 1610-1690), published ca. 1780 CE. An 18th century engraving by Frenchman Louis Simon Lempereur entitled "Delices des Flamans" (Flemish Delights or Amusements) after a 17th century painting by David Teniers the Younger of smokers in an inn. The genre scene includes two men smoking pipes in the foreground, one gentleman filling his pipe with tobacco just behind them, and a lady and gentleman conversing in the background. A wonderful composition ideal for anyone interested in the history of tobacco and its cultural associations. Below is a royal seal as well as a dedication to the Count of Clermont. Size: image measures 16.375" L x 10.75" W (41.6 cm x 27.3 cm); 25.75" L x 20.375" W (65.4 cm x 51.8 cm) framed
Another "Delices des Flamans" is in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand. The curatorial description is as follows, "Simon Lempereur (1728-1808) was one of the leading French engravers of his day, appointed engraver to the king, Louis XV, in 1759. He was elected to the Academy, and was a leading illustrator of the Comte de Buffon's world-famous Natural History (1749-60). Here, like his rival in the field Levasseur, he bases his engraving on a work by the famous Flemish genre painter, David Teniers the Younger (1610-90). Entitled 'Flemish Amusements' Teniers (and Lempereur) tread close to caricature in this interior scene depicting five of Teniers's countrymen, boorish. The scene, from the beer barrels, is set in a dingy tavern or den. While the main group is engaged in smoking, quite what the man stepping into the beer barrel at top left is about to do is uncertain, and probably doesn't bear thinking about. The inscription, 'Dedicated to the Count of Clermont', is elegant and grand in inverse proportion to the Flemish gentlemen. Louis, Count of Clermont (1709-71) was the then owner of the original painting. A related work (c. 1640), entitled Peasants smoking in an inn, is in the Cleveland Museum of Art." Condition
This engraving has not been examined outside of the frame. It appears that the plate mark is very strong. There is normal foxing and toning to the paper. The frame shows minor age wear, but is still serviceable with the original glass.
