Europe, Continental School, ca. late 18th c. A bust-length, oil on canvas portrait of a woman with a mesmerizing visage and an elegant costume. A lady of high social standing, she dons a silk or satin gown of ruby red and sapphire blue jewel tone hues, tastefully adorned by glistening white bows, lace, and pearls that complement her snow white coiffure. The bodice is embellished with a bow over the chest from which strands of pearls fall and swoop, a ruffle of intricately tatted white lace rising above the bow, and another bow decorating her right sleeve. Her visage is quite entrancing, with gray-blue eyes peering out below generous lids; neatly manicured, arched brows leading to an aquiline nose; pursed heart-shaped ruby red lips, and an alabaster complexion, all crowned by an elaborate updo with banana curls gracing her neckline. Light shines from the golden background, and the painting is surrounded by an ornately carved frame that is embellished with brass and gold wash. Size of painting: 24.75" L x 20.75" W (62.9 cm x 52.7 cm) Size of frame: 35.625" L x 31.875" W (90.5 cm x 81 cm)
