European, possibly Italy, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A marvelous portrait of Saint Augustine (also known as Bishop of Hippo in North Africa - one of the four Latin Fathers and perhaps the Church's most esteemed and influential theologians) depicted as a bishop wearing sumptuous vestments: crimson brocade robe with golden trim and a gold brooch set with a ruby cabochon fastening it over the chest, a white blousy shirt beneath, a bejeweled golden mitre, velvet gloves of the same crimson hue as his robe, and a gold and gemstone ring. St. Augustine holds an elaborate crozier and a model of a cathedral. In addition, a depiction of a bearded man - perhaps Augustine himself - dressed in billowing vestments and reading a Gospel is visible on a section of his robes (over his right shoulder and to the right of his crozier), and a bird sits upon his left shoulder. Contributing to the splendor of the painting is its remarkably ornate, hand-carved, gilded Baroque frame. Size: 29.5" L x 21" W (74.9 cm x 53.3 cm); 38" L x 29.5" W (96.5 cm x 74.9 cm) including frame
