Europe, France, ca. 15th century CE. A single leaf from an illuminated manuscript with 12 lines of calligraphic text and beautiful floral imagery on both sides of the vellum. The text is written in gold with some letters in red. Four large illuminated initials rendered in gold leaf and further embellished in red and blue begin passages of the text. The stunning floral vines beside the texts are finely delineated in gold leaf, red, black, green, and blue pigments. We have not removed this page from the frame, but one can see silhouettes of what appear to be additional illuminated initials and text on the verso. This page probably comes from a Book of Hours, a prayer book used by wealthy laypeople; or a Breviary for the clergy, the Divine Office; both included Psalms, hymns, and various prayers recited at specific hours of the day. The page is set against a red velvet backing and under glass, within a wooden frame. Size: 6.125" L x 4.875" W (15.6 cm x 12.4 cm); 10.75" L x 8.875" W (27.3 cm x 22.5 cm) including frame

Condition
The page has not been examined outside the frame. It appears to have minute losses to the right edge of the sheet and slight toning to the paper. It also seems like the verso of the page is also illuminated. The frame, which dates later than the illuminated manuscript page, is in good, serviceable condition. Please also note that this piece is not laid down, but is instead set loosely within the frame and likely able to be removed if so desired.
