North America, Western United States, Montana, Two Medicine Formation, Late Cretaceous, ca. 77 to 74 million years ago. An extremely rare and massive tooth from the tyrannosaurid Daspletosaurus (horneri). This tooth is in remarkable condition with lustrous black enamel - check out the size as well! Fine grade teeth of this tyrannosaurid predator are extremely limited and the color and size are major considerations for collectors, this is one of the best we’ve seen! There are 3 species of tyrannosaur collected at the Two Medicine Formation, and Daspletosaurus was the largest - the size of the tooth helps with identification, as well as the round cross section. Serrations run along both sides, pleasantly tactile today, but ideal for tearing flesh from prey. Size: 2.71" L x 0.97" W (6.9 cm x 2.5 cm)
Fossil remains of tyrannosaurs represent the pinnacle of dinosaur fossil collections and exhibits the world over. Daspletosaur was an older relative to Tyrannosaurus rex, and an apex predator for its time - a bipedal carnivore, reaching lengths of 26 to 30 feet (8to 9 meters) with about 70 teeth! They coexisted with another tyrannosaurid of a similar size, Gorgosaurus. The universal appeal and rarity compared to ever-increasing market demand, put fine quality Tyrannosaur fossils at the forefront of the most desirable fossils of any collection. The size of this tooth is extraordinary and impressive!
