East Asia, China, Upper Miocene to Pliocene, ca. 13.7 to 3.4 million years ago. An incredible fossilized skull from a prehistoric rhinoceros species known as Chilotherium wimani, with prominent tusk-like second incisors, each on either side of a wide diastema. The skull and teeth are wonderfully prepared to show off the anatomical structure of this rare prehistoric species! Both sexes of Chilotherium were hornless, the tusk like teeth likely serving a similar function as their horned relatives - potentially to defend against predators or fighting other males for a mate. The tusks are set forward, curving upward, which could facilitate digging up roots and grasses, since Chilotherium evolved into specialized grazers rather than leaf browsers. They are often described as "tubby" when compared to other rhinos due to their stumpy legs that were low to the ground, and powerful necks to control their pitchfork like teeth. This is an impressive skull from an unusual rhino species! Size (skull): 16.5" L x 8.8" W x 8.25" H (41.9 cm x 22.4 cm x 21 cm); (incisors): 6" L (15.2 cm)
