Ancient Seas, Morocco, Late Eocene, ca. 40 to 35 million years ago. This is an incredible fossilized jawbone and frightening teeth from a Basilosaurus, the first fully aquatic whale species! This is the lower left mandible containing 4 relatively "normal" conical teeth at the front (incisors and canines) and then the 6 monstrous serrated premolars and molars at the back - note the multitude of serrations / cusps on the molars! The various shapes enabled Basilosaurus to chew its food, unlike modern whales which swallow prey whole. They were a predatory species that hunted fish, sharks, and other prehistoric sea animals. A spectacular specimen that is visually appealing and a fascinating example of whale evolution! Size: 22.75" L x 1.5" W x 6" H (57.8 cm x 3.8 cm x 15.2 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand; (largest tooth): 2.5" L x 2" W (6.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
Basilosaurus means "king lizard" which is a misnomer since this was one of the largest mammals at the time - however early discoveries revealed they had an elongated, snake-like body leading scientists to think it was a type of reptile when they first uncovered this whale's remains. As a primitive whale, Basilosaurus still retained unusual traits that were closer to terrestrial relatives, such as elbows in their front flippers and their multi cusped molars for tearing- demonstrating the transitional stage between land mammals and whales!
