North America, Alaska, or Central Asia, Siberia, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 200,000 to 10,000 years ago. This is a fine collection of pieces from the prehistoric woolly mammoth, which includes two fragments of ivory from tusks and a tuft of fur from these woolly giants. The largest fragment is comprised of several layers of the exterior surface of the tusk - the enamel and cementum, both have turned a caramel brown and black hue. The other fragment is a cut and polished cross section that shows the layer of enamel and cementum as well but reveals the characteristic pearly white and crosshatched graining. The hairs came from the hide or body of a mammoth that was preserved within the ice or permafrost of the Siberian tundra. This is an amazing collection that helps us visualize this majestic elephantids! Size of larger tusk fragment: 18" L x 2.5" W (45.7 cm x 6.4 cm); cross section fragment: 4" L x 2" W (10.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
