North America, Midwestern United States, Kansas, Gove County, Smoky Hill Chalk (Niobrara Formation), Cretaceous, ca. 112.6 million years ago. This is a monstrous but incredible fossilized Enchodus petrosus fish! The Enchodus was a prehistoric fish nicknamed the "saber-toothed herring" - look at those oversized "canine" teeth on the jaws! The teeth are the most noticeable detail, excavated to protrude from the rest of the surface! This extinct species was not a herring but a predator ray-finned fish; a sleek body for speed, with large eyes for seeking prey. The dark brown of the fossil contrasts beautifully with the chalky beige limestone. Despite the predator status, this fish has often been found in the stomach of sharks and reptiles, perhaps this decapitated head comes from such an unfortunate event - the rest of the body swallowed, as the head drifted to the ocean floor and fossilized. Size of fossil: 13.75" L x 9.5" W (34.9 cm x 24.1 cm); frame: 19.75" L x 17.5" W (50.2 cm x 44.4 cm)
