- Lot Description
North America, Eastern United States, North Carolina, Aurora, Pungo River Formation, Miocene, ca. 23 million years ago; Western United States, Utah, Late Jurassic, ca. 155 to 145 million years ago. This is a wonderful pair of fossil remains from a shark and a dinosaur. The bone is from the carnivorous biped, Allosaurus, cut and polished into an egg shape, the remarkable coloration a result of agatization - the bone material replaced with silica creating a mottled black, taupe, and crystalline white surface. The fossilized tooth comes from a cow shark; likely Notorynchus cepedianus. While it looks like 7 teeth on a matrix, this is actually a single tooth with 7 cusps; the largest is serrated! Unsurprisingly these sharks have monstrous jaws, perfect for a sci-fi movie. There are several cow shark species today, their teeth and bodies have changed very little over the millions of years, retaining a primitive appearance! Size of dino bone: 1.75" L x 1.25" W (4.4 cm x 3.2 cm); tooth: 1" L x 0.8" W (2.5 cm x 2 cm)
