North Africa, Sahara, Morocco, mid-Cretaceous, ca. 100 to 93 million years old. A fossilized tooth from Carcharodontosaurus, one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs of its time - potentially even surpassing Tyrannosaurus rex in size! This formidable predator's serrated, slightly curved teeth functioned like steak knives, allowing it to slice effortlessly through thick skin and flesh. Rich iron-based minerals have imbued this tooth with striking umber brown and mahogany red hues, highlighting the immense age and fossilization process it underwent. Named after the shark genus Carcharodon, Carcharodontosaurus translates to "shark-toothed lizard" - a fitting name for this apex predator.
