Ancient Seas, Morocco, Eastern Anti-Atlas, Jbel Wawrmast Formation, Cambrian Period, ca. 541 to 485.4 Million years ago. A fossilized trilobite within a stone matrix and the imprint from the exoskeleton preserved within another matrix! This "sea bug" is of the Cambropallas telesto genus, the classic trilobite shape with the rounded cephalon head exhibiting genal spines, and an ovoid, segmented body. As this trilobite fossilized, it was preserved within layers of silt or sediment; when the matrix was prepared, the top covering came away, leaving a near perfect imprint of the exoskeleton ridges! The lovely orange coloration of the trilobite is a natural result of the oxidation of the iron pyrite and contrasts with the gray of the slate matrix. Size of fossil: 3.75" L x 2.675" W (9.5 cm x 6.8 cm); matrix half: 4" L x 0.5" W x 5.125" H (10.2 cm x 1.3 cm x 13 cm)
