Native American, United States, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine gathering of 5 hand-knapped stone thunderbirds exhibiting a myriad of earthen hues. Two of the avian effigies have enormous wings spread out to the sides of their triangular bodies, their heads and beaks turned to the side, with notches flanking their tails. Another beige-hued bird has a relatively flat head and a narrow tail, and a dark gray bird holds its wings up high. The most petite bird is the most colorful and bears hues of orange, pink, and red. Thunderbirds were potent symbols of power and strength that have been used by Native American tribespeople for centuries. Size of largest: 9.3" W x 3.25" H (23.6 cm x 8.3 cm)
