Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A fabulous cast tumbaga labret with a high 60% gold content! This labret or lip plug presents an attractive design comprised of a hollow and conical shape with a slightly conical tip that is decorated with a central pair of parallel ridges of openwork filigree, granulated spheres, and a raised rope patterned border. Although gold was not a form of currency in Pre-Columbian South America, it had great symbolic power, used by elites in life and in death to demonstrate their place in society. A prominent labret of such beauty would certainly mark the wearer as an elite member of society. Size: 1.8" L x 1" Diameter (4.6 cm x 2.5 cm); quality of tumbaga: 60% gold, 20% silver, 20% copper; weight: 5.4 grams
