Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A stunning figurine depicting a standing murmillo (also murmillo, myrmillo) class gladiator wearing knee-high greaves and simple boots on both legs. The figure presents in a striding pose with an extended left leg while wearing a cloth wrap around his waist and right shoulder. The gladiator stands in a readying pose with his left arm extended as if holding a shield and brandishes a typical Roman gladius in his right hand. His right forearm is covered by a manica (arm guard) and he wears a plumed helmet with a crested face lining and a vertical nasal bridge flanked with two petite eye holes. Smooth layers of lustrous green patina have developed across all surfaces and create an encapsulating appearance evocative of ancient Roman splendor! Size: 1.5" W x 2.75" H (3.8 cm x 7 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
