Pre-Columbia, Colombia, Middle Cauca / Quimbaya culture, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A charming hand-built pottery male slab figure with tubular arms and legs. The figure is seated upon a wide posterior with deep grooves delineating the upper and lower legs, and holds his arms in an almost theatrical pose, each hand bearing a small pierced hole meant for additional ornamentation. The rectangular head boasts a minimalist visage composed of slit-form eyes and lips, a prominent aquiline nose with a pierced septum, petite pierced ears, and a trio of impressed slits lining the forehead. Slab figures like this example were placed with burial offerings in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. A fine and highly-stylized example covered in pale orange pigment with traces of black pigment visible along the face. Size: 10.125" W x 10.8" H (25.7 cm x 27.4 cm).
Provenance: ex-John Rich collection, California, USA. John Rich was a notable Hollywood producer/director.
