Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A gorgeous cuff bracelet comprised of electrum with a content of 55.8% to 62% gold and 36% to 41.5% silver. The periphery of the openwork accessory is adorned with dozens of petite ringlets in repousse that enclose eight nubbin-shaped protrusions that are evenly spaced across the center of the body. The thin form suggests this bracelet was hammered from a sheet of electrum which would have been used only by the wealthiest and most prominent members of the ancient Paracas civilization. Size: 2.875" W x 3.375" H (7.3 cm x 8.6 cm); 5.9" H (15 cm) on included custom stand; quality of electrum: 55.8% to 62% gold and 36% to 41.5% silver.
Ancient Andean cultures perfected sophisticated metallurgical techniques in order to create opulent gold and silver jewelry intended for both the living and the dead. Metalsmiths heated soft nuggets of gold and silver and then rolled them into thin sheets before shaping the repousse details, and electrum sheets like this example required an extra processing step where the gold and silver were first combined in an early form of smelting. Once the sheets of glinting metal were formed, they could be cut and embossed with intricate geometric motifs and abstract figural artistry replete with layers of symbolism.
