- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, Panama, Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. An elegant pottery vase with a hemispheric base, a rounded shoulder, and a cylindrical neck that gently broadens to a flared rim. The vessel is covered in a creamy white slip with rings of black, purple, and red pigment encircling the neck, a wide register of abstract black and purple barbed spiraling entities adorning the shoulder, and a red base. The interior of the neck is also red, and lovely black fret motifs radiate from the outermost of three slender concentric bands on the rim. The colors on this vessel are fantastic, and the inclusion of purple coloration suggests this is of the Conte/Macaracas style. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. To the ancient Panamanians, these exquisitely painted motifs would have conjured a known mythic or Shamanic being. The composition of this design is comprised of these fantastical life forms in combination with geometric bands of red, purple, and black. Geometric design elements such as these were imbued with powerful symbolism, although the cognitive intent of these is no longer known.
