- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery pedestal plate of a grand stature that is embellished with dense linear and geometric motifs in hues of black, red, and purple atop a beige ground. The vessel presents with a massive, flared foot beneath a tapered pedestal neck that is surmounted by a shallow yet wide plate body. The foot, pedestal, and underside of the plate bear thick black lines that create large windows in which triangular, diamond, and semicircular panels house abstract zoomorphic creatures. Within the tondo of the stripe-rimmed plate is an incredibly abstract figure - perhaps more animal than human - with a dramatically curving body and enormous talons lining both the hands and feet. The surrounding ground is filled with serrated stingray-style barbs that are emanating off of nearly every available peripheral surface of the figure. An intriguing and highly abstract example! Abrasions to basin, rim, neck, and foot, with touch-up painting to scattered areas. Great preservation to motifs along pedestal and within basin.Condition
