Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Late Nazca, Phase 6 to 7, ca. 550 to 750 CE. A fabulous pottery jar boasting a spherical form with a conical neck and circular rim, all sitting upon a rounded base. Adorned in hues of ochre, maroon, burnt sienna, tan, cream, and black, the ancient vessel is skillfully painted with the image of marching agriculturists or seed planters along the upper 2/3 of its exterior. Each planter is displayed in profile, facing right as they hold a tall digging stick before them. They display minimalist forms with target motif eyes, delineated mouths, slender bodies, and muscular legs. Sizeable seed bags hang from their necks, while loin cloths cover their lower bodies and lengthy coiffures cascade downwards from the backs of their heads. The narrow neck of the vessel is flanked by a pair of petite lug handles and beneath each is painted a small nude child with hands raised. A tan-colored slip covers the bottom of the jar, separated from the figures via a horizontal black band. Size: 6.8" Diameter x 7.1" H (17.3 cm x 18 cm)
Alternatively, the neck and rim are embellished with black pigment on the exterior and burnt sienna on the interior.
