Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A magnificent pottery mask skillfully molded and richly painted in russet red and beige hues. The facial features are strong, with a pronounced nose and septum ornament, large lower lip, and narrow eyes with drilled pupils, which probably once held inlays of shell or other stone. The ears are adorned with flared ear spools with curled attachments above, and the hair is held back by a striated headband embellished with a flower ornament inlaid with shimmering mica shards. The tombs of the Maya royal and elite often contain these masks for burials during the Classic period. The flower motifs symbolize fertility and rebirth for the wearer. Beyond its rich iconography, signs of the artisan's skilled technique and artistry add to its undeniable value! Size: 8.25" L x 7.5" W (21 cm x 19 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
