Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina / Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 800 CE A polychrome tripod plate, featuring a striking profile depiction of the mythological Muan bird, which is often associated with omens, divine messages, and the underworld in Maya cosmology. Encircling the rim is an abstract shape - somewhat zoomorphic - that is referred to as saurian monsters by some museum collections. This combination of the Muan bird and the rim design is a popular motif in Maya art. The ornate motif and wide, shallow form on three raised legs suggest the vessel was used in ritual offerings or elite feasting ceremonies. In some interpretations, the Muan bird is an owl or vulture, symbols of death, representing the transition of souls to the underworld, or as a messenger between the human world and the divine. The Muan bird is also linked to divination and prophecy, and appears in the Popol Vuh, the Maya creation myth, further emphasizing its role in Maya cosmology and religious beliefs. Size: 10.5" Diameter x 3.375" H (26.7 cm x 8.6 cm)
