Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, late Classic Period, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A polychrome pottery cylinder vessel, a ritual container resting on tripodal nub feet in excellent condition, slipped in orange, tan and red. The exterior has a wonderful depiction of seated cisiques (lords), each with opulent attire, one with spotted jaguar loin cloth, another with a deer headdress, loincloth, beaded neck collars, and ear ornaments. There are hieroglyphic symbols between the figures within boxes, which may identify the names or rank of the people depicted, providing context to the scene. Polychrome ceramic containers held significant meaning among the Maya, serving as a representation of prestige and authority. These vessels were exclusively utilized by the elite class and were valuable offerings and often deposited in burial sites. Size: 6.25" Diameter x 4.5" H (15.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
