Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A delicate and stunning pectoral medallion carved from nacre (mother-of-pearl) in an openwork circular form that depicts a fierce eagle warrior in the center. The incised, right-facing avian head presents with a gaping beak beneath a singular eye, a backswept crest, and a discoid amulet that doubles as the medallion's central attachment area. The outstretched wings are finely decorated with incised curvilinear striations and guarded with a circular shield beneath the left appendage. A skirt in front of the lower body and legs bears three columnar bars with unique incised decorations, and dozens of petite, bow-drilled perforations line the peripheries and some interior areas of the disc. Brilliant rainbow-hued iridescence graces the convex ornament. Custom display case included. Size: 3.2" W x 3.125" H (8.1 cm x 7.9 cm); 9.55" H (24.3 cm) on included custom stand; (display case): 7.5" L x 8.5" W x 11.375" H (19 cm x 21.6 cm x 28.9 cm)
