Ancient Western Asia, Northwestern Iran and Southwestern Turkey, South Caspian Sea region, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A gorgeous short sword of a formidable form that is covered in thick layers of green and brown patina. The weapon exhibits an openwork lunate pommel with a ribbed exterior surface, an openwork handle displaying its original wooden inserts and attachment rivets, and a rectangular hand guard with pinched lateral edges. Inlays of stone, bone, or other materials would have adorned the handle cavity at one time. The slender blade bears a smooth midrib on both faces as well as sharpened edges along the peripheries that culminate in a relatively pointed tip. Size: 18.9" L x 1.8" W (48 cm x 4.6 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Chips and abrasions to blade faces and edges, with small area of light green infill material on blade tip, nicks and fissuring to wooden inserts in handle cavities, and losses to original handle inlays, otherwise intact and excellent. Wonderful patina throughout, and nice preservation to wooden handle inserts. Old find information reading "LURISTAN" written in white ink atop clear substance along inside curve of pommel.
