Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A stunning figure of Osiris, god of the underworld, that is cast from bronze and bears thick, mottled layers of patina in hues of green, brown, citrine, and russet. The deity stands with fused legs in mummiform atop an integral cuboid plinth, wears an intricate wesekh broad collar as well as a plaited postiche beard, and holds his heka scepter and flagellum (nekhakh) in staggered hands atop his abdomen. His poignant visage bears heavy lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a tall nose with flared nostrils, full lips flanked by accentuated nasolabial folds, and gently cupped ears. Atop his brow rests the Atef crown with a pair of ostrich feathers, a pair of spiraling ram horns, and a frontal uraeus cobra. Size: 9.625" H (24.4 cm); custom display stand included.
Osiris is one of the most revered gods in Egyptian civilization and is sometimes referred to as the son of Ra, the sun god, and father of the falcon-headed god Horus. In hieroglyphs Osiris is often depicted with green skin, evocative of his role in the afterlife; or with brown skin, indicating an associated also with fertility, in this case the mud of the Nile, whose seasonal flood was the most important natural event in ancient Egypt.
