Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (also Jama Coaque), ca. 200 CE. A finely modeled and painted ceramic figure depicting an elaborately decorated ruler and/or shaman bedecked with ornaments such as a human skull headdress, enormous ear ornaments which appear to feature his likeness or perhaps that of an ancestor or deity with beaded and feathered danglers, as well as his beaded pectoral furnished with a grand pendant presenting a zoomorphic visage. The figure is mold-made with applied decorations and beautiful blue-green, red, and yellow pigment adorning the headdress, face, clothing, jewelry, and platform appliques - these pigments perhaps representing turquoise, jade, or emerald; spondylus, and gold respectively. Facing forward with a proud visage dominated by his wide-open, almond-shaped eyes, dressed in an opulent garment with grand shoulder ornaments and appliques, and so highly decorated, this figure likely portrayed an elite leader, kneeling upon an integral base as if engaged in a sacred ritual. Size: 7.25" L x 3.875" W x 4.875" H (18.4 cm x 9.8 cm x 12.4 cm)
The Jama Coaque culture is best known for its ceramic figurines and vessels that, like this example, are typically more elaborately adorned and clothed than those of other coastal cultures of their day. Headdresses, jewelry, and styles of dress were all signifiers of rank and social status within many pre-Columbian societies. This figure represents one of the best-known aspects of the Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) artistic legacy, a realistic pottery figure that was probably a portrait of an individual who members of their society would have recognized.
