Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century CE. A skillfully-carved marble head of a bearded male, perhaps a deity such as Zeus, but possibly a more pedestrian portrayal as the new international culture of the Hellenistic era lead to a wide range of subject matter (see more on this below). The head is exquisitely carved, clearly by the hand of a skilled sculptor, with deeply set almond-shaped eyes beneath a smooth brow line, an aquiline nose, finely-contoured cheeks, and wavy facial hair surrounding a full lower lip. His voluminous coiffure is styled with a wavy fringe crowned by a laurel leaf wreath that is tied at the back, and rippling locks hugging the rest of his head. Breathtaking for its veristic visage with a stern yet gentle countenance, as was characteristic of the Hellenistic period, this is a fabulous example! Size: 3.5" W x 4.5" H (8.9 cm x 11.4 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
The arts prospered during the Hellenistic period when kings took pride in being patrons of the arts and commissioned public art as well as private luxury pieces to demonstrate their elite taste and wealth. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hellenistic milieu was that artists were commissioned to portray rather unorthodox subjects, including working-class maidens, the elderly, children, and ethnic phenotypes.

A head from a larger figure with some loss to the lower peripheries as well as the beard and coiffure on right proper side of the head as shown. Normal surface wear commensurate with age. This said, the details of the carving are remarkably strong. Scattered deposits grace the surface.
