Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. This is a stunning high quality 88% (equivalent to 21K+) gold earring with an intricate semicircular profile and anthropomorphic visage! The face on the main body depicts a maenad, the female consort of Dionysus (also Dionysos), the Greek god of wine. She presents a repousse visage with rounded cheeks under granulated spheres of grape bunches and applied filigree wire as a diadem. The hollow head is surmounted on a thick wire that acts as the original loop, curving backward and tapering to the slender tip that would pass through the earlobe. At the back of the woman's head is an integral suspension loop which was the original clasp for the wire. Earrings like these would have been worn by high status Greek and Roman women, who treasured their jewelry - some of the only private property elite women could own in the Classical Mediterranean. This earring is exceptional for the fine artistry, size, and material! Size: 1.43" L x 1.2" W (3.6 cm x 3 cm); gold quality: 88% (equivalent to 21K+); weight: 10.4 grams
