Ancient Seas, North America, Middle Miocene to end of Pliocene eras, ca. 28 to 1.5 million years ago. This is a large tooth from a prehistoric megalodon shark which exhibits several fine characteristics of the fossilization process. The root is a matte brown with mottled lighter beige inclusion, and the cavities are from boring clams that made the tooth their home as the tooth rested at the bottom of the ocean. The triangular enamel section has developed lustrous layers of pearly gray hues with speckles of brown; the colors are a result of the minerals and chemicals present in the sediment and water. A wonderful tooth from one of the ancient seas' most ferocious hunters that still strikes fear today. Pictured stand not included, but available for an additional fee. Size: 5.32" L x 3.7" W (13.5 cm x 9.4 cm)
