Classical World, Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful mold-formed terracotta votive in the form of a youthful female's head. Her elegant visage is presented above a slender neck line with almond-shaped eyes beneath tooled lids and gently-arching brows, a naturalistic nose, finely-tapered cheeks, and full lips with indented corners. Short bangs cover the top of her smooth forehead and peek out from the edge of a thin veil which falls to the nape of her neck. A fabulous example of quality Etruscan artistry! Size: 7.4" W x 11.25" H (18.8 cm x 28.6 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Votive heads like this example were placed in temples as forms of requests or offerings to thank the gods. Sculptors used molds and stamps to create images of women and men. On particularly fine examples, such as this head, the artist refined features and details of the face and hair with a pointed tool prior to firing in the kiln. The bold, enlivened eyes and wavy coiffure are hallmarks of the Etruscan style.
