Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty to Ptolemaic period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. An outstanding and large carved and polychrome wood statue depicting the Egyptian god of resurrection, Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, standing and wearing a tightly fitting mummiform garment, tripartite wig, and beard. This beautiful figure has well preserved and bright original pigments, nearly impeccable condition forming the facial features and broad collar which terminates in profile Horus falcon heads. A single band of hieroglyphic script down front and back has offering invocations with names of gods which translates as follows on the obverse: "May a royal offering be given to Osiris, foremost of the west, great god, lord of Abydos, Onnophris, ruler of eternity." Continuing on the reverse: "May a royal offering be given to Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, that he may (in turn) give invocation offerings of bread, beer, oxen, fowl, alabaster, linen, refreshing… May a royal offering be given to Osiris, water." Size: 25.5" H (64.8 cm); 27.5" H (69.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Ptah Sokar Osiris is one of the most complicated concepts of Egyptian mythology. The figures shown here represents the god's three parts: Ptah, the creator god of Memphis; Sokar, the patron of the Memphite necropolis, and Osiris, the god of the afterlife and lord of the underworld. All three are traditionally depicted in mummy forms; Osiris and Ptah as men, and Sokar as a falcon. Together, they tell a story of birth, death, and resurrection. These figures became popular after ca. 1000 BCE and are associated with elite burials.
