Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A highly detailed and mold formed faience pendant with the face of the dwarf god Bes. The visage is comprised of his characteristically rounded and chubby cheeks, partially covered by a beard, a stub nose complete with drilled nostrils, and wide, sunken eyes. His open mouth and protruding tongue from a grimace, a fierce countenance intended to ward off evil. His ears were pierced for additional ornamentation and earrings at one time. The top has an integral loop for suspension. Bes is the dwarf deity associated with protecting the household, especially women and children. The verso is flat and smooth and would have rested comfortably against the wearer's skin. Covered in a deep teal glaze, this is an expressive and well-preserved example of ancient Egyptian artistry.
