Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. An attractive, mold-formed faience amulet enveloped in vibrant blue-green glaze and depicting the 2-dimensional image of the Egyptian Moon god Khonsu in his zoomorphic falcon form. Incised in fine detail on one side, Khonsu stands in profile, facing right and balancing atop an integral plinth with slender legs, folded wings, a broad tail, and a distinct, avian visage. While this falcon-form is traditionally associated with Horus, the lunar disc that crowns his head distinctly identifies him as the Moon god Khonsu. A petite suspension hole perforates horizontally through the top of his head, allowing the amulet to be worn as a bead or pendant. Size: 0.5" W x 0.9" H (1.3 cm x 2.3 cm)
Khonsu is an ancient god whose main role was associated with the moon. His name means "traveler" - a possible allusion to the nightly travel of the moon across the sky. He additionally held the titles of "Embracer," "Pathfinder," and "Defender," as he was thought to watch overnight travelers. As the god of light in the night, Khonsu was invoked to protect against wild animals, increase male virility, and aid with healing. It was said that when Khonsu caused the crescent moon to shine, women conceived, cattle became fertile, and all nostrils and every throat was filled with fresh air.
