Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A beautiful axe god pendant of a characteristically abstract avian form, hand-carved and string-cut from dark green omphacite jade with black and gray inclusions. The intriguing figure stands with a broad, acutely angled base - hence the name 'axe' god - and holds both rectangular hands in front of the gently rounded chest. Strung-cut grooves delineate the shoulders and pectoral muscles as well as the deep recesses that form the neck; a biconically drilled suspension hole is bored through the neck. The trapezoidal head features a pair of drilled eyes, a rhombus-shaped beak, lateral striations perhaps indicative of feathers, and a tapered brow with a trio of lengthwise striations. Visible on the verso is a smoothed ridge showing where this stone slab was separated from the larger jade stone. Size: 1.9" W x 4.9" H (4.8 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Bird pendants were made for centuries in many styles, materials, and sizes in the area stretching from Costa Rica to north and central Colombia in the south. As sky animals, birds were regarded as messengers between humankind and deities of the celestial realm in the Pre-Columbian world. This example was carved from a lovely jade of mottled dark green hues that exhibits wonderful gray and black veining.
