Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of a gadrooned form with a spherical body, dozens of vertical ribs, and a squat neck surmounted by a flared rim, all atop a trio of legs shaped like abstract birds or bird heads. The exterior surfaces are adorned with vibrant red slip characteristic of fine Colima pottery creations. This vessel was perhaps used for storing food or drink. Condition
Professional stabilization to one lengthy fissure along underside, with resurfacing and overpainting. Stable fissures on bottom of body and rim, with light abrasions and fading to pigment. Nice mineral staining.
